After years of campaigning by his sister, Deborah, a bronze statue will be erected in Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham's memory in his hometown of Redditch, England, about 15 miles south of Birmingham. Bonham died September 25th, 1980, leading to the untimely end of Led Zeppelin.
The bronze statue in Bonham's likeness should be unveiled in time for Bonham's 70th birthday in May, pending the approval of "a few amendments". Plans were approved by Redditch City Council on Wednesday, October 11th. A majority of the funds for the project were raised by private donation after the John Bonham Memorial Fund was created in 2013. Renowned British sculptor Mark Richards will complete the project, the Redditch Adviser reported.
At the highest point, the memorial will stand 6 feet high, 16 feet wide, and a depth of about 4 feet. It will have a arc shaped footprint, a wheelchair friendly path, and a 360 degree viewing spectrum. It will weigh more than 5,512 pounts altogether.
As a huge Zeppelin fan, I am glad to see John Bonham's hometown deciding to honor his memory after all these years and it will definitely be a cool thing to see once it is finished.
